Welcome to My Texas House! Thanks for stopping by! My website is the best resource for sources, links, photos, and all the details on my home and the My Texas House brand.
Today, I’m sharing an update I did in my son’s room with some great products I found from The Home Depot. Jason turned twelve this week, which I’m having a hard time believing! I guess I still see him as my little guy, but he’s definitely not so little anymore. I’ve definitely tried to listen to him and his opinions about his room, and update his space as he grows and matures.
One thing he requested as his birthday approached this summer was to have his old dresser replaced. We’ve had his old blue dresser for about 8 years. It was an inexpensive, build-it-yourself type dresser, and it had definitely reached its expiration date. The drawers had stopped working properly and one had even broken off completely!
I found this beautiful and high quality dresser on The Home Depot! I wanted one that was solid wood and sturdy so it would hold up for my son for the long haul. This dresser is definitely heavy duty! My husband, daughter, and I could barely get it up our stairs! I also was looking for a dresser that would match the nightstands we hand in the room already. To my delight, the dresser looks just like the nightstands! They are the exact same wood tone and texture, and they even have the same color hardware! A perfect match!
My son had also requested earlier this year to change his room back to his previous Star Wars theme. We had changed the space to a more generic “grown up” look after he had decided he was not feeling the Star Wars decor anymore. But he became obsessed with the series all over again this year after seeing the last installment of the Star Wars saga.
So we brought back his original artwork over his bed, and some of his other Star Wars decor. For over his new dresser, I found these fabulous distressed look Darth Vader and Storm Trooper canvas prints on The Home Depot’s website. I love that it looks like these canvases are shiplap wood planks! They work so well with the coastal farmhouse look of his room. The artwork comes in many different sizes. Jason’s artwork is the 24″x30″ size.
I decided to change out the bedding in here as well to freshen up the look, and added this pink tucked white comforter. Along with that, I changed out the rug in his space. The Saltillo rug from my rug collection looks so great in his room and really brightens up the space. Best of all it is so super soft! This rug is available on The Home Depot in this size, 5×8!
New Nerf Gun Storage
The final new addition to Jason’s room doesn’t really fit in with the decor theme of the room, but I can tell you it is all about function! We created a peg board storage wall for all of Jason’s Nerf guns and his prized lightsaber! These toys are always all over his room and we haven’t found a great way to store them! It’s basically the only toy that he still plays with, so we gave him a fun and super organized way to store and display them! He was so excited when I surprised him with this new Nerf “armory”!
To create a storage wall like this is really easy! We bought all the products we needed for it at The Home Depot! We got 6 square peg boards (each board is 16”x16”). We then bought a peg board hook set as well as few extra peg board hooks. My husband drilled the peg boards into the wall, and then it was as simple as adding the hooks and deciding how to place all the Nerf guns!
Jason is thrilled with the new look of his room, which is a good thing since he is having to spend lots of time doing his virtual schooling in there. We thankfully had already outfitted his room with a functional desk space last Fall, so he was ready to go when school started! We got this desk, chair, and bulletin/chalk boards from The Home Depot. You can check out the post I did last fall when we added those products here.
