Welcome to My Texas House! Thanks for stopping by! My website is the best resource for sources, links, photos, and all the details on my home and the My Texas House brand.
Hey guys, as promised I am giving a little review of our visit to the Austin area last week over spring break. We have visited Austin several times before, but our trips in the past were focused on either kids sporting events or doing activities in the downtown Austin area. But for this trip, we wanted to just have a fun and relaxing trip instead of doing lots of touring around and sight seeing.
I’m going to give you a quick run-down of what we did, where we ate, and even, what I wore! In fact, Walmart reached out to me to try some of their new fashion brands for their “We Dress America” campaign (did you see the commercials for the campaign during the Oscars? Loved them!). So I thought this trip would be the perfect opportunity for me to wear some of the cute and affordable new outfits I got from Walmart!
So for this trip, we decided to book a couple nights at the Lakeway Resort and Spa right on the banks of Lake Travis! We had heard amazing thing about this resort, and it did not disappoint! This hotel has stunning views of Lake Travis. Our room was really nice and updated and had a balcony that had expansive views of the lake!
Lakeway Resort has a resort style pool and spa with cabanas and also has a play pool with a large water slide for the kids. My kiddos thought the pool and water slide were the highlight of the trip! The hotel also had many other fun activities like nightly marshmallow roasting and with all the fixin’ for s’mores. We loved this! They also had Lake activities like jet skiing, boat rentals, and even zip lining. We decided to save those for our next trip, when the weather was a little warmer. The hotel even has an on-site restaurant with gorgeous views of the lake. I would highly recommend this hotel if you’re ever in the Austin area!
For this trip we stayed mostly around the hotel and enjoyed the pool and the stunning views. We did tour around the Lakeway area and checked out some of the great shopping. We only had a few days in Austin, and the SXSW festival was going on in Austin during our trip, which made a trip into downtown Austin pretty impossible due to the traffic (it gets crazy busy!).
If you’re coming to Austin for a visit (when it’s not during the SXSW festival), a trip to see the Texas State capitol building is a must! It’s a beautiful building, and is grand in scale as anything you would see in Washington DC! I also enjoy touring the city and seeing all the beautiful historical buildings and homes. When it’s warmer, Austin is known for its many outdoor and Lake that would’ve been fun like hiking, boating and jet skiing! The gorgeous 358 acre Zilker Park and it’s Barton Springs pool is also one of the top destinations in the Austin area.
One of the best things to do in Austin is to enjoy the amazing variety of restaurants! Texas is, of course, know for it’s BBQ,, an the Austin area has no shortage of amazing BBQ places to eat. I got many great suggestions from you guys of where to eat while in the Lakeway area. Some of the most popular suggestions included: The Oasis, The Salt Lick BBQ, Steiner Ranch Steakhouse, Jack Allen’s and County Line BBQ. We tried out the Oasis, which is know for its stunning and sweeping views of Lake Travis. Unfortunately, the wait was 1.5 hours long and we had some hungry kids, so we decided not to wait. We did enjoy the 360 views from the lookout point at the shopping center.
We ended eating that night at a really cute restaurant that was perfect for the kids because it had a little playground attached to it. It was called the Galaxy Cafe. The food was amazing there!
We also ate at McArthur’s Gastro pub for breakfast one morning. This place was great because it had great food and service and no one else was there! Apparently they just started serving breakfast and people hadn’t heard about it yet.
Lastly, we had a great authentic Mexican food dining experience at Rosie’s Tamale House. This place has been there since the 60s and it literally hasn’t changed since then. Very very retro! The service was great and we really enjoyed the food! And this was another place that wasn’t crowded, so it was a perfect low key meal.
Finally, like I mentioned above, Walmart contacted me to work with them on their “We Dress America” Campaign! I had never personally worn Walmart’s clothes, but have been buying my kiddos Walmart clothes for years, since my oldest was a baby. I tried out the new Sofia Vergara line of clothing which is exclusively at Walmart. I loved this cute jean jacket and white skinny jeans. I paired it with this soft tie front blush top (which is less than $10!!) and super cute wedges (less than $20!) from Walmart as well. I was seriously impressed with the quality and style of the clothes. And you can’t beat the price! Every item I wore was less than $32! And my whole outfit was less than $100 including the shoes!
I also tried out this cute chambray button up top from the new EV1 line at Walmart. I loved the cute floral detailing on the sleeves. These black jeggings were really comfy as well and only $16! Kayla’s cute little denim jacket is also available on Walmart.com. And I found some adorable unicorn jelly mary janes like Kayla’s for only $14 on Walmart site as well! Overall, I was so happy with the items I got from Walmart. I will definitely be checking out their clothing online in the future!
We loved our visit to Austin and cannot wait to go back again! Let me know if you have any questions about our trip. And be sure to check out Walmart’s new clothing line for you next get-a-way. I love that they have such affordable and fashionable things for the whole family!
