Welcome to My Texas House! Thanks for stopping by! My website is the best resource for sources, links, photos, and all the details on my home and the My Texas House brand.
Hey friends! I’ve been mentioning for a while on my page that I’m looking to update our playroom to better reflect the current developmental stage of my children. My kids are now ages 13, 10 and almost 7, yet our playroom is really geared toward younger children with lots of toy bins and larger items for pretend play. So recently I decided to begin converting our playroom into more of a teen hangout space that will work better for our kids moving forward.
Since budget is always the first consideration when updating a space, I first decided to make a plan for what I wanted the completed teen hangout space to look like, and then figure out how I could stay within my budget by updating the room in stages. The first stage I wanted to address in the space is the storage.
Getting organized in our home is a priority for me as we begin this new year, so I searched The Home Depot’s amazing selection of storage furniture and I found a beautiful and sophisticated mirrored console unit. I loved this Home Decorator’s Collection piece because not only did it have the sophisticated vibe I was going for in this space, but it had ample hidden storage for some of our playroom toys and other riffraff I need to store in this room! Our previous console unit had glass fronts, allowing the clutter inside the cabinet to be seen. This gorgeous storage console actually comes in three separate pieces making it more manageable to move and more versatile for use in smaller spaces.
I added these two gorgeous white lamps from The Home Depot with gold accents to each side of the console! I love their sleek and contemporary look. They come as a set and are so affordable for this quality! Above my new console I added a gallery wall of family photos using simple gold frames (similar frames can be found here). To complete this new vignette in this updated space, I just added some decorative vases and this cute hand figurine (Similar items can be found below).
The Home Depot has such an amazing selection of beautiful furniture and home decor. I especially love the Home Decorator’s Collection line of products (this console unit included) which have a high end look but are so affordable! As I mentioned, I hope to complete this room in stages so I can stay within our family’s budget. My next step for this room is to purchase a sofa, coffee table, side tables, bookshelves, and wall art. I will be removing the playhouse from the space and moving the play table and mini kitchen to my daughter’s room to make room for the new items. I have created a mood board with The Home Depot products that will help me stay on track with the vision I have for this sophisticated teen hang out space!
As soon as my budget allows, I will purchase the remaining items on my mood board for my updated playroom/teen space! When you have the big picture in mind when completing a room, you are able to plan and budget for the items you want and purchase them over time. That way you don’t have to sacrifice quality and style, and instead just spread out the investment over time! Make sure you try to purchase larger items and storage solutions first so you can make adjustments to the space planning as needed once you get them in your space. I will do a Part 2 to this post once I have completed our updated teen hang-out! I’m excited to see how it will turn out!
