Hey guys! Today I’m excited to show you the makeover I did on our office. I’ve actually never shown my office here on the blog before. When we first moved in to the house 3 and a half years ago I designed the office especially for my husband. I tried to make sure the light fixture, desk, and all the decor was dark, heavy and had a masculine feel to it! Now that we’re both working from home and share the office, I decided to brighten it up, rearrange the furniture, and give the space a little French country style makeover!

Above you can see what our office looked like when I first designed it…lots of dark decor and the desk faced the French doors to the office. This configuration didn’t leave much room for additional seating. I was able to place a small chair in the corner for when I was working on my laptop and we often laughed that it was my timeout chair! The layout didn’t work for us, and the space felt dark and cramped.

With the new configuration, we are able to position the desk so it looks out the big beautiful window instead of looking at the doors to the office! It’s made such an impact on the feel and function of this space! There is also room now to fit two accent chairs for when we both want to work in the space at the same time. It also allows for a proper place for clients to sit if necessary.

Bringing in a lighter rug and accessories

Another way I opened up and brightened the space was to bring in a lighter colored rug. I also added these gorgeous white, French country style Safavieh lamp set that I found on eBay.com. They came as a set of 2 and were priced so well for such high quality, name brand lamps! EBay has such a huge selection of brand new home decor items available to chose from. I especially love the Overstock on eBay store. I can search for a furniture or home decor item on the Overstock on eBay store and then price compare the same item with several other retailers on eBay so I can always get the best deal! 

We also changed out the desk chair from an old black office chair (that was totally falling apart by the way), for a much more esthetically attractive office chair. I found this gorgeous farmhouse style linen and wood roller desk chair on eBay. I love the striped fabric and the light wood tone.

Changing up Shelf Styling 

Next, I decided to change out the shelf decor in the office and give it a more feminine French country look. When we first moved in, I bought a ton of dark blue and black decor to go on the shelves in this space. These shelves were one of the first things in the whole house that I styled and I really haven’t changed it much since then.

Now the shelves feel more light and airy, and add to the cohesive look of the French country style of the space. For the bookshelf makeover, I tried to keep things really simple and symmetrical! I started working from the top down and made sure the right and left sides mirrored each other exactly. I then used larger pieces in the center shelf column. I even removed a shelf to fit in the large metal wreath. 

One question I’m often asked is where I get all my vintage book sets I have throughout the house. Well, I actually got all of these books from eBay! In my experience, eBay has the best selection of vintage book sets of all types and colors. If you search for “vintage book sets” or even a specific color of books like “white book sets” on eBay you’ll find dozens upon dozens of options. You can even set up a search alert so if you don’t find what you’re looking for the first time you search, eBay will email you when books (or whatever item your looking for) of the correct color and price become available!

Now that this makeover is done, the next change we would like to make in this space is to change our the chandelier and possibly find a desk or set of desks that could accommodate both my husband and I. We would love to have a fully functioning dual office space, but for now we’ve made this space a lot more doable for us to share! I’m excited to start using the space more now!
